Indigo dyeing as a symbol for personal and collective transformation.

In this hybrid indigo workshop/collaborative community art project, participants meditate on what personal and collective transformation they desire to bring forth in our shared world. The insights are written on small flags and dipped into the dye vat, witnessing the transformation of color as a symbol of personal and collective transmutation.

Participants are encouraged to bring a few items of used clothing/textiles to charge in the vat while experimenting with dye, folding, and resisit techniques, breathing new life into used apparel, consciously and creatively rebelling against the over consumptive and environmentally destructive culture of fast fashion.

While Indigo Spell began and still is a touring pop up community art project (and collective spell) it has evolved into a longer format curriculum exploring the history of the indigo pigment in relation to tradition and social justice.

Conversations around what expired stories exist in our world are paired with imagination harnessing exercises to vision the dreams we have for the world we share.

This curriculum was originally developed as a two day teacher training for community leaders of the Los Angeles based non profit Green Arrow Co-Lab. It’s next incarnation will be in Seatlle for Mini Mart City Park’s Artivism program.
